OBAGI
We were approached to work on a new project for Obagi, a skincare brand specialising in medical-grade products. Obagi’s brand positioning called for a refined, science-led visual approach.
We were tasked with creating four individual 3d animated product videos within a tight four-week production window. This required an efficient and scalable creative process, as the final deliverables would include over 90 seconds of animation. The Obagi team had not previously worked with CGI or 3d animation, so we guided them through each stage, providing illustrated storyboards, style frames, and pre-vis animations to help align on the creative vision before moving into final renders.

PRE-PRODUCTION | STORYBOARD
During the early stages of look development, we created detailed storyboards and boardomatics to establish the visual flow, pacing, and narrative structure of each animation as each needed to feel unique but also work as a series. We settled on a repurposable opening and closing sequence to be used across each product video, paired with unique animations for the main body that showcased the features and benefits of each product. Supplemental copy was also developed to highlight the ingredients and scientific rationale behind each product, helping to tie the visuals back to Obagi’s medically grounded identity.

PRODUCTION | ANIMATION EXPLORATIONS
The creative goal was to give each product its own heroic moment—conveying a sense of premium quality while remaining rooted in the clinical credibility of the brand. We focused on a clean, elegant aesthetic using carefully considered lighting, scene builds, and a refined color palette.
The animations needed to be dynamic and visually engaging, without feeling overly playful—striking a balance that felt both elevated and accessible. Starting with illustrated style frames, we translated our concepts into fully modelled 3D products and began the previs phase. Given the condensed timeline, many of these stages ran concurrently to meet deadlines without compromising quality.
The Retinol video was the first of the four animations completed within the production window and to be launched on the market.

By combining clarity in storytelling with a polished visual language, we delivered a series of animations that elevated Obagi’s product line while staying true to the brand’s scientific foundations. The use of 3D animation not only brought the products to life in an engaging and premium way—it also provided the client with reusable, scalable assets for future campaigns. This project demonstrated how thoughtful creative and strategic production can help even first-time clients confidently step into the world of 3d animated content.
