MINDMATTER | CAVE

We were approached with a cinematic and creative brief that sparked a path of research and development, revealing innumerable possibilities for the execution of the concept. Our excitement to bring it to life was palpable. The caves emerged as the initial ingredient of the story, providing the perfect setup. We approached the development of the cave with a cinematic scale, drawing references from real ice caves in Iceland and concept art from sci-fi movies.

PRODUCTION | CGI EXPLORATION

Ice played the role of a supportive actor, serving functions from containing the proteins to framing the space. Our approach entailed studying its properties using photo references and developing a CGI version through multiple iterations that allowed us to stage the cave and frame the story. Working in 3D afforded us incredible latitude to showcase different stages of the ice, ranging from completely frosted to crystal clear. This guided the viewer’s attention toward the discovery of the proteins.

In our approach to representing the proteins (and the heart) within the context of the story, we employed complex 3D shaders with various levels of shine and transparency, paired with a cinematic light setup, which enabled us to create a visually fantastic execution of the story. We approached the material of the protein structures in a manner that provided contrast with the ice. Utilizing the brand colors, we tested different approaches to its translucency, reflection, and shine.

From their outfits to their postures, and from their gear to their gestures, we photographed the pioneers against a gray cyc in the studio to seamlessly match the CG environment and communicate a sense of adventure and discovery in their journey.

POST PRODUCTION | LIGHTING STUDIES

The key light’s narrative role of focusing on the discovery of the protein structure guides the viewer's attention. Using backlights to enhance the transparency of the ice (alongside fresnel shading materials to achieve a rim highlight), we adorned the scene and established a visual hierarchy—from bright spot to shadows—that completed the story.
